Body jewellery

We all understand the temptation to change your initial jewelry as soon as possible, especially with such a wide variety of great body jewelry that allows you to show off your piercing in your own personal style. But we can't stress enough how important it is to wait for the initial healing period before attempting to change your piercing. It's critical to the long-term well being of your piercing.

Unless there's a problem with the size, material, or type of jewelry used for the piercing, keep it in for the entire duration of the initial healing period. (link to healing chart page)
If you do need to change the jewelry, consult a professional piercer.

When you're ready you to change your jewellery, it's worth the trip to your piercing studio. The change is usually included with the initial price of the piercing. Studios that did not perform your piercing can also help you, and usually charge a small fee for the service.

General tips for changing your jewellery:

- Keep it clean. Wash your hands, jewellery, and piercing area with a mild antibacterial soap.
- The new jewellery should be the same gauge (thickness) as the original jewellery (that is, unless you are stretching).
- It's easier to insert the new body jewellery if you lubricate the jewellery and the piercing area with antibacterial soap or a water-based lubricant. To lubricate the piercing area, put a dab on the existing body jewellery and rotate it.
- A hot shower or bath will help soften the skin so the piercing can be changed more easily.

When you're ready to change your navel piercing yourself, follow these steps:

1. Wash your hands, jewellery, and piercing area with antibacterial soap.
2. Unscrew the ball (depending on the style, it's either at the top or bottom of the belly ring)
3. Insert the belly ring barbell into your piercing hole starting from the bottom (inside) of the navel. Push the barbell up and out of the top hole.
4. Screw the ball on the barbell
5. Rewash the entire area and you're done!
